Earthly Dads will leave but God is your forever Father

Soul Food

“For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”

– Isaiah 9:6

“Though my father and mother forsake me the Lord will receive me.”

– Psalm 27:10

Soul Search

  • Was your biological Dad physically present in your life when you were growing up?
If not, do you know why he wasn’t?
If he was present was he a positive or negative influence?
Is this something (or is he someone) you can talk about?

  • Did you have a stepdad who was present in your life when you were growing up?
Was he a positive or negative influence?
    In what ways?

  • Do you believe God can play an important part in your life and make up some, if not all, of the voids and gaps that might have been left in your life by your earthly father’s absence or by his negative influences?

  • Do you have perspectives on God’s character that are similar to your perspectives regarding your earthly father?

Soul Moves

  • Ask God to show you how your earthly Dad (whether he was your biological dad or your stepdad) was good in all the ways God is good and to show you how he was less-than-ideal in not representing the character and nature of God.

  • Remembering that no one is perfect, ask God to help you not project onto God the negative things that were characteristic of your earthly dad’s attitudes and behaviors.

  • If you’re now a Dad, are you a good reflection of the character and nature of God to your children or are there areas where you know God needs to help you improve to be the best Dad you can be who reflects God’s character?
