Do What God Asks You To Do & You'll Never Go Without

I Kings 17:7-16

God will keep us alive during lean times but we must follow His instructions closely

I Kings 17:7-16

“Some time later the brook dried up because there had been no rain in the land. Then the word of the Lord came to him: ‘Go at once to Zarephath in the region of Sidon and stay there. I have directed a widow there to supply you with food.’ So he went to Zarephath. When he came to the town gate, a widow was there gathering sticks. He called to her and asked, ‘Would you bring me a little water in a jar so I may have a drink?’ As she was going to get it, he called, ‘And bring me, please, a piece of bread.’

‘As surely as the Lord your God lives,’ she replied, ‘I don’t have any bread—only a handful of flour in a jar and a little olive oil in a jug. I am gathering a few sticks to take home and make a meal for myself and my son, that we may eat it—and die.’

Elijah said to her, ‘Don’t be afraid. Go home and do as you have said. But first make a small loaf of bread for me from what you have and bring it to me, and then make something for yourself and your son. For this is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: The jar of flour will not be used up and the jug of oil will not run dry until the day the Lord sends rain on the

land.’

She went away and did as Elijah had told her. So there was food every day for Elijah and for the woman and her family. For the jar of flour was not used up and the jug of oil did not run dry, in keeping with the word of the Lord spoken by Elijah.”

Soul Search

  • Have you ever had God speak to you to do something strange, “crazy,” out-of-the-norm or unimaginable?
    What was it?

  • Maybe you wouldn’t say it was God who directed you to do something unimaginable, but you sensed (or were being nudged) you were to do something you couldn’t rationalize or make sense of.
If it wasn’t God, then what or who do you think was inspiring and motivating you and why?

  • If you followed through and did the unimaginable, what happened?
    What lessons did you learn?

  • Were people around you affected by your unimaginable decisions?
Were they helped or hurt by your decisions?
Can you describe what happened to you and to them?

Soul Moves

  • So much of what God does through His children in this world is contrary to the ways our world and culture work.
Ask God to make you an example and teacher to others of someone who completely trusts God.

  • Ask God to develop your personal faith by giving you opportunities to do the unthinkable.
Be willing to put yourself in a place of complete dependency on Him in order to live and to have your faith developed.
This kind of asking (in prayer) is only for the very courageous.

  • Ask God to make you an example to others of a person who lives by faith and dependency on God.
Desire to be a godly example to those around you of someone who doesn’t just live and conduct his or her life by “normal” means.

  • Ask God to make you a better listener who hears the voice of His Holy Spirit clearly and also ask Him for the courage to make you someone who responds obediently to what He tells you to do.
